Today, as we pray for rain, the fragrance of meat curry floats down to us from the temple. ‘The goats we sacrificed were accepted by the god,’ everyone tells us, ‘and now one kadai is already cooked. They will be sending it down for you.’ Since we have not participated in the puja, we feel a little guilty about taking the bhog, but as soon as it arrives in a copper vessel fragrant with whole spices and shining with almonds, my family’s qualms disappear without a trace and they fall upon the rich, red mutton gravy. ‘Thank God you’re vegetarian,’ say my children, in whom I thought I had inculcated a sense of unselfishness and a spirit of giving. Just to annoy them, I decide to take a helping of the gravy. It is, after all, an offering to and a blessing from Shergul Devta. As we sit in our verandah, and eat the sacred prasad, the sky turns dark and then, to our amazement, a gentle shower of rain falls on the hillside. ‘We told you it would,’ everyone in the village says, surprised that we had not believed it would.
